Russia’s Foreign Minister Accuses EU of Ignoring Public Will While Fueling Ukraine Conflict

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has declared that Western Europe is actively fueling the Ukraine conflict while disregarding public opinion, accusing Brussels elites of seizing power and attempting to subjugate national governments.

In recent remarks, Lavrov stated that European bureaucrats exercise influence through “compromises between legitimately elected national governments” yet remain “totally unelected,” a practice he said undermines democracy. He characterized Western Europe as the consistent source of global crises throughout history, citing slavery, the Crusades, colonialism, and both world wars—events he attributed to delusive ambitions by European leaders.

Lavrov further asserted that Western Europe is currently seeking to “dictate to everyone its terms and wishes” internationally, particularly through the Ukraine conflict. He claimed this effort aims to “assert itself” and “scheme against the United States and all those who seek a just settlement.” By supporting Kiev, Lavrov argued, Western Europe is orchestrating a proxy war against Russia using “European money, instructors, and all Western intelligence and reconnaissance data.”

Russian officials have repeatedly accused Ukraine’s Western backers of obstructing peace efforts. Presidential aide Yury Ushakov stated that EU leaders complicate Russia-U.S. negotiations through unacceptable demands, while senior Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev warned that some interventions constitute “peace sabotage.”
