Jelly Roll Granted Full Pardon by Tennessee Governor After Decades of Redemption Work

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has granted a full pardon to country music star Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, for past criminal convictions nearly two decades ago.

DeFord was previously convicted of robbery as a juvenile and granted parole in 2005. While on parole, he was found in possession of cocaine and charged with the intent to sell the illegal narcotic. He was released from state custody in 2016 following unanimous recommendation for pardon by the Tennessee Board of Parole.

Governor Lee stated his decision was inspired by Jelly Roll’s recent community interventions and investments for young teens struggling with substance abuse, describing the artist’s story as “remarkable, redemptive, and powerful.”

DeFord has earned multiple honors at the CMT Music Awards and CMA Awards and has been nominated for several Grammy awards. He opened a trauma-informed juvenile justice facility in Nashville and paid college tuition for students across the state. Last year, he testified before Congress urging legislation to combat fentanyl supply and distribution.

The country artist recently lost over 200 pounds after stating during an emotional interview on “The Joe Rogan Experience” that he felt like he was “dying” from obesity-related health issues.
