LAPD Abandons Kamala Harris Protection Amid Internal Backlash

The Los Angeles Police Department has terminated its security detail for Kamala Harris following intense criticism over diverting resources from local crime-fighting efforts. The move comes after President Trump revoked the extended Secret Service protection for Harris, which had been granted by former President Biden.

A dozen Metro Division officers were initially stationed outside Harris’ Brentwood, California home to provide security, but the arrangement collapsed within days. LAPD officers were pulled from patrols in the San Fernando Valley, prompting outrage among union members who argued the shift prioritized a “failed presidential candidate” over public safety.

The Los Angeles Police Protective League condemned the decision, stating it was “nuts” to divert resources from crime suppression to guard a “multi-millionaire” who could afford private security. Mayor Karen Bass had previously directed the LAPD to assist with protection after Trump’s action, calling it an act of “political retaliation.” However, the union rejected the move, citing ongoing concerns about rising crime in the Valley.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, whose office approved the California Highway Patrol’s involvement, emphasized that public safety should not be “subject to erratic, vindictive political impulse.” The brief security detail highlighted tensions between federal and local law enforcement amid shifting political dynamics.
