In a recent debate against Representative Ralph Norman (R-SC), Senator Darline Graham Nordone (R-SC) admitted she is “not that informed” on national security issues, prompting immediate criticism.
When asked whether Taiwan and the South China Sea constitute U.S. national security concerns, Graham Nordone responded: “I’m just going to be honest here; I’m not that informed on national security.” The senator, sister of late Senator Lindsey Graham, emphasized her support for military service: “My brother was in the Air Force for 33 years, so I will do everything I can to support the military. My dad was in the Army.” She acknowledged her lack of expertise in national security matters but reiterated her commitment to military advocacy.
The exchange occurred during a Tuesday night debate at an opera house in Newberry, South Carolina. Graham Nordone also stated that South Carolina has 50 million residents—a figure corrected by Norman to reflect the state’s actual population of 5.5 million.
Former United Nations Ambassador and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who has endorsed Norman, criticized Graham Nordone’s remarks, stating: “Lindsey Graham was well informed on the United States’ national security. Darline Graham admits she’s not.”
Graham Nordone’s vulnerability in her campaign to succeed her brother underscored a critical gap in her qualifications for the Senate race. While she entered with President Trump’s endorsement and name recognition, she lacks Norman’s extensive experience as a five-term congressman and vice chairman of the Freedom Caucus. In the August 11 special primary, Graham Nordone finished second behind Norman but neither secured sufficient votes to avoid a runoff.
