Beloved Local News Anchor Celeste Wilson Passes Away Suddenly at 42

Local news anchor Celeste Wilson, described as “beloved” and “an absolute joy to be around,” has died suddenly at age 42. She succumbed to a heart attack, leaving colleagues and communities in shock over her untimely passing.

Wilson, a weekend anchor for WAPT 16 in Jackson, was recently hired by the station, where she quickly made an impression with her professionalism, warmth, and dedication to journalism. Her network shared the tragic news on air Wednesday, stating, “Though Celeste had only been with us a short time, we were already touched by her professionalism, warmth, and dedication to the work of journalism.” The station added, “All of us here at 16 WAPT are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and our thoughts are with Celeste’s family and friends.”

A New Orleans native, Wilson began her broadcasting career at a CBS affiliate in Monroe, La., after earning her master’s degree in journalism from Arizona State University. Her storytelling passion led her to multiple local news stations, including a role as co-host of a weekly PBS program before joining the ABC affiliate in Jackson.

Peter Keith, WAPT 16 president and general manager, praised Wilson’s impact, saying, “She was an absolute joy to be around — a consummate professional with a smile that would light up a room.” He highlighted her commitment to journalism as service, noting her belief in “showing up, asking fair questions, and giving voice to those too often unheard.”
