Elif Eralp, the leading candidate for Berlin’s mayorship and member of Germany’s Die Linke party, has disclosed in private notes accidentally shared with Der Spiegel that she fears some of her supporters due to their connections with the Hamas terrorist group.
The documents, which include annotations added by Eralp and her spokesperson, state: “Neither my husband nor I want to mention specific names; he is afraid of these people, and so am I.” The notes also reference advice from Berlin’s State Criminal Police Office (LKA) that previously warned against naming individuals linked to organized crime—a guidance now being applied to those with ties to Hamas.
Eralp initially confirmed in an interview that she was referring to a pro-Palestinian activist named Ibrahim Ibrahim but later requested the statement be deleted. The incident has raised concerns about her political strategy as she campaigns for the mayoral position.
