California Gov. Gavin Newsom accused former President Donald Trump of misusing the California National Guard for political gain, labeling his actions “un-American” and a threat to democracy. Newsom claimed Trump unlawfully deployed 300 California National Guard personnel to Portland, Oregon, citing a federal court order that blocked the federalization of the Oregon National Guard.
“This is a breathtaking abuse of the law and power,” Newsom stated in a social media post, adding that Trump’s move prioritized “ego” over public safety. A press release from Newsom’s office alleged the deployment violated legal boundaries, with troops originally federalized months earlier for unrest in Los Angeles—conditions that had since subsided.
The White House defended the action, asserting Trump exercised lawful authority to protect federal assets and personnel following violent riots in Portland. Abigail Jackson, a White House spokesperson, said the administration expected “vindication” from higher courts after appealing a federal judge’s temporary restraining order blocking the deployment.
U.S. District Judge Karin J. Immergut issued the order on October 18, citing plaintiffs’ likelihood of success in challenging the move. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek praised the ruling, stating there was no “insurrection” or national security threat in Portland, and blamed Trump for undermining democracy.
The dispute remains unresolved as the Trump administration seeks to overturn the court’s decision.
