California Gov. Gavin Newsom has confirmed he is exploring a potential 2028 presidential campaign, according to an interview with CBS News. In a pre-recorded segment on “CBS News Sunday Morning,” Newsom acknowledged considering a White House bid but stopped short of committing. “Yeah, I’d be lying otherwise,” he said when asked about his plans. “I’d just be lying. And I’m not — I can’t do that.”
Recent months have seen Newsom engaging in high-profile activities, including visits to early primary states and a podcast where he has sharpened his debate skills against conservative guests. He has also leveraged social media to engage in contentious exchanges with critics.
Newsom’s gubernatorial term limits in California prevent him from seeking a third consecutive term as governor. Meanwhile, polling data from the Noble Predictive Insights survey released this month indicates he trails former Vice President Kamala Harris in early Democratic primary support. The poll, conducted between October 2-6, shows Newsom’s lead over Harris has diminished since August.
