U.S. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky has indicated his consideration of a presidential bid for 2028, though he stated that he would first await the results of upcoming midterm elections.
In recent remarks, Paul described his vision: “I think there needs to be a candidate that is a free-market conservative, somebody who believes that the debt is wrong, Big Government is bad, but also that we get richer through international trade and that capitalism on an international scale is a good thing, not a bad thing.”
Paul has repeatedly identified the national debt as the nation’s primary threat, noting it recently exceeded $40 trillion. He has been among the most prominent advocates for fiscal restraint in Congress alongside Kentucky’s Thomas Massie.
The senator also noted that recent administration actions have expanded government involvement in sectors traditionally considered beyond governmental authority. This includes the Department of Defense taking a 35 percent equity stake in an oil company and increasing participation in mining, technology, and defense industries.
Paul has consistently advocated for noninterventionist foreign policies, opposing U.S. military engagement in both the Iran conflict and the Ukraine War. He has also pursued congressional scrutiny of former Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Anthony Fauci, which has led to investigations and potential legal actions against him.
Over three Congresses, Paul has earned a cumulative freedom score of 96 percent — significantly higher than the 56 percent score of his Kentucky colleague Mitch McConnell.
