The investigation into the sudden death of 36-year-old actress Hayden Panettiere has taken a major turn, with law enforcement sources indicating a single oxycodone pill suspected of being laced with fentanyl.
Panettiere was found unresponsive at a temporary residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16 and died later that day after first responders determined she was in cardiac arrest. According to new reports, multiple law enforcement sources connected to the case believe Panettiere took an oxycodone pill that had been contaminated with fentanyl on the morning of her death. These sources stated she allegedly obtained several black-market prescription drugs from a longtime dealer in Los Angeles before traveling to South Carolina.
U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents in Los Angeles are currently tracing the suspected fatal pill back to its source and investigating Panettiere’s relationship with that alleged supplier. Authorities in South Carolina are also actively conducting their own review of the circumstances surrounding her death.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office confirmed the autopsy revealed no signs of trauma contributing to her death, but noted the official cause and manner of death remain pending until additional studies are completed. Toxicology results are still pending, meaning the fentanyl-laced pill theory described by investigators is not yet a final ruling from the coroner.
Panettiere had publicly discussed struggles with alcohol and opioid addiction, postpartum depression, and recovery before her death. Her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, was published only months prior to her passing. The case highlights the devastating risks of illicit drug markets, where a single counterfeit pill can become fatal.
