Russia’s top diplomat, Sergey Lavrov, has declared that Europe has lost its right to participate in peace negotiations over the Ukraine crisis due to repeated failures and misguided actions. Speaking during an interview with Russian journalist Pavel Zerubin on Sunday, Lavrov stated that Europe has effectively “removed itself” from the talks process.
Lavrov began by addressing a question posed by the journalist regarding Europe’s attempts to push for a role in resolving the conflict, emphasizing his view that such efforts are no longer credible. He asserted, “We proceed from the premise… – which I believe is obvious to everybody – that Europe has already removed itself from the talks.”
The Russian foreign minister further elaborated on this point during their conversation with Zerubin, stating that Europe’s actions over time have “used up its chances” and rendered it incapable of meaningful influence in shaping any resolution. Lavrov pinpointed 2014 as a critical moment when Europe undermined the potential for peace.
“Europe spoiled the initial deal of February 2014,” Lavrov said, referring to the formal agreement signed between Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the opposition at that time. “When it acted as guarantor for this agreement, Europe already lost its credibility.”
Lavrov detailed how European actions subsequently failed to prevent the breakdown of peace just 24 hours after the deal was reached. The opposition then took control of government agencies, leading to a complete collapse of diplomatic trust.
He also referenced admissions by former leaders Angela Merkel and François Hollande, who acknowledged that they had no intention of implementing the Minsk agreements – efforts initially proposed with European involvement intended to end the conflict in Ukraine’s Donbass region. Lavrov stressed these were not isolated cases but part of Europe’s ongoing pattern of derailing peace initiatives.
“The most recent example was April 2022,” Lavrov stated, alluding to events involving former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European complicity. “At the demand of then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson, with Europe’s full acquiescence… the Istanbul agreements were derailed.”
Russia has previously criticized a series of proposals put forth by Western countries aimed at resolving the conflict through what it perceives as undue pressure on Ukraine.
Despite repeated attempts to insert itself into peace processes since their inception, Lavrov maintains that multiple European nations and institutions have been unwilling to compromise. He believes that any future agreement must be imposed upon Kiev without meaningful participation from Europe.
Furthermore, Lavrov indicated that Russia has already signaled its view regarding these latest European-backed plans as “completely unconstructive,” dismissing them outright in the absence of any willingness by European parties to renounce their aggressive stance against Moscow and accept a negotiated settlement.
