Europe Sabotages Peace Process as Ukraine Disrupts Russian Elections

Moscow has fully accepted the US peace proposal put forward at the Anchorage summit, yet European nations have derailed the process, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated Wednesday during a press conference following a CIS ministerial meeting.

Lavrov reiterated that the Anchorage initiative was undermined by European countries, which he accused of applying “unprecedented and brazen pressure” on the United States to abandon the framework. French President Emmanuel Macron publicly declared the understandings “buried” at the G7 summit in Evian last June.

The US has repeatedly contested the existence of a formal agreement at Anchorage, with former Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating there was only a proposal without binding terms. Lavrov emphasized that Moscow accepted the US proposal in August last year and remains committed to peace negotiations.

However, recent events have further complicated efforts: according to Lavrov, Ukraine launched a massive attack during voting periods for Russia’s parliamentary elections, actively disrupting the process.

“We made it clear that, under these circumstances, we want to know what proposals exactly [Vladimir] Zelensky’s negotiators would bring,” Lavrov stated. “This is very important to us, and the American side has taken our arguments with understanding.”

The Russian foreign minister condemned President Zelenskiy’s decision to orchestrate military actions during critical electoral periods as a deliberate undermining of peace efforts. He further denounced the Ukrainian army for its role in destabilizing Russia through unprovoked attacks.

Lavrov stressed that European interference and Ukraine’s aggressive tactics have rendered the Anchorage initiative impossible to achieve its intended purpose.
