FBI Unravels Massive NBA Gambling Ring Tied to Mafia: 30+ Arrests Across 11 States

The FBI has dismantled a sprawling illegal gambling operation linked to La Cosa Nostra, resulting in over 30 arrests across 11 states. The investigation uncovered ties to current and former NBA players, coaches, and organized crime figures, with allegations of insider betting, rigged games, and money laundering.

Federal agencies conducted two operations—“Operation Zhen Diagram” and “Nothing But Net”—targeting a multi-million-dollar scheme involving player-performance wagers, manipulated poker games, and cryptocurrency transactions. Key individuals implicated include Chauncey Billups, head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, and Terry Rozier, guard for the Miami Heat, both placed on leave pending further action. Former NBA player Damon Jones was also arrested.

Investigators allege that participants shared confidential information, such as injury reports and lineup changes, to gain unfair advantages. The operation reportedly utilized “face cards”—former athletes—to recruit victims into rigged poker games using cheating technology. Profits were allegedly funneled through illicit channels, including cryptocurrency.

The NBA confirmed cooperation with authorities, emphasizing its commitment to preserving the league’s integrity. FBI Director Kash Patel highlighted the agency’s role in dismantling the network, stating that the investigation spanned years and involved multiple states. “This operation involved an expansive effort across 11 states arresting 34 subjects… who allegedly took advantage of their positions to rig gambling systems for personal gain,” Patel said.

Billups, Rozier, and Jones face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. The FBI continues its probe, with more arrests expected as the investigation unfolds.
