Ghislaine Maxwell’s Attorney Accuses Rep. Jamie Raskin of Leaking Emails

The attorney of convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell has accused Rep. Jamie Raskin of leaking emails of her client to the press. Maxell’s attorney Leah Saffian rebuked the representative from Maryland for leaking the emails and called for him to be punished. The article reports more details on the scandal:
Workers at the Texas federal prison camp housing Jeffrey Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell have been fired for leaking emails in which she described the cushy conditions — and the Democratic lawmaker who purportedly made them public should be punished too, her attorney said in a fiery statement Friday. Leah Saffian rebuked House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) over the publication of messages in which Maxwell raved about her treatment at Federal Prison Camp Bryan — even praising warden Tanisha Hall for helping her send and receive documents needed for her unsuccessful appeal to the Supreme Court. “The congressman is a ranking member of the House Oversight [actually Judiciary] Committee, an attorney and law professor. He must be aware that his conduct undermines the whole legal process,” Saffian said. “His action should be a matter for professional disciplinary action.” “There have been appropriate consequences already for employees at Federal Prison Camp Bryan,” Saffian went on. “They have been terminated for improper, unauthorized access to the email system used by the Federal Bureau of Prisons [BOP] to allow inmates to communicate with the outside world. “The provision of those emails to a federal official who then caused them to be shared with the media is a breach of constitutional protections including the First, Sixth and Fourteenth amendments afforded to all prisoners.” The emails from Maxwell, 63, were published by NBC News Nov. 8. The following Monday, Raskin fired off a letter to President Trump claiming that a whistleblower had told him Maxwell was “preparing a ‘Commutation Application’ for your Administration to review, undoubtedly coming to you for your direct consideration.” In Friday’s statement, Saffian claimed that Maxwell, serving a 20-year sentence after her December 2021 conviction for federal charges of grooming and sexually abusing young women, “has not requested a commutation — or a made a pardon — application to the second Trump administration.” CNN reported more on Raskin’s move: Earlier this week, Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, released what he said was information about Maxwell’s life inside the Bryan prison — including special privileges being afforded to the late-Jeffrey Epstein’s right-hand woman — that was shared with Raskin by a whistleblower. The whistleblower also told Raskin that Maxwell, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison, is in the process of preparing to file an application for commutation. According to an email that the whistleblower shared with the committee, Maxwell wrote to Saffian in early October that she planned to send materials “through the warden.” House Judiciary Committee Democrats on Friday defended how they received and released the information and disputed that the correspondence was privileged. “The House Judiciary Committee Minority’s letter was based on a range of documents and information shared with Committee staff by a whistleblower. None of the documents shared with the Committee from the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) TRULINCS system was subject to the attorney client privilege,” a House Judiciary Democratic spokeswoman told CNN. The spokeswoman pointed out that individuals have to accept a disclaimer that their activity will be monitored once logging into the prison’s systems. She said the disclaimer makes clear that DOJ may monitor the system and that users must consent to such monitoring and have no expectation that communications will stay private.
