Kamala Harris will receive protection from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), according to reports. The decision follows President Trump’s revocation of her Secret Service detail, which ended on Monday. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office coordinated the arrangement after Harris lost federal security coverage.
Bass stated, “This is another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation in the form of firings, the revoking of security clearances and more. This puts the former Vice President in danger and I look forward to working with the governor to make sure Vice President Harris is safe in Los Angeles.”
Harris’ security detail had been extended by then-President Biden until July 2026, but Trump’s memorandum ended her protection. Former vice presidents typically receive Secret Service protection for six months after leaving office, while ex-presidents get lifelong coverage. Without the extension, Harris’ security would have expired last month.
Newsom’s office declined to confirm the CHP arrangement, stating, “Our office does not comment on security arrangements. The safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses.”
Harris is set to begin a book tour for her memoir, 107 Days, which details her 2024 presidential campaign. The 15-city tour includes stops in Los Angeles, New York City, Miami, Toronto, and London. Social media users criticized the tour, with some mocking it as “the loser tour” and questioning her decision to promote a book about her election defeat.
