Legendary NFL Center Nick Mangold Passes Away at 41 After Battle with Kidney Disease

Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold, a revered figure in franchise history, has died at age 41 due to complications from kidney disease. Mangold, who played for the Jets from 2006 to 2016, was a seven-time All-Pro and one of the most respected players in NFL history.

Jets Chairman Woody Johnson praised Mangold’s legacy, calling him “the heartbeat of our offensive line” and highlighting his leadership, toughness, and warmth both on and off the field. Mangold announced in early 2023 that he had been living with a rare genetic disorder since 2006, requiring kidney dialysis. He later appealed to the public for a type O blood donor after family members were unavailable to help.

Mangold’s career included three playoff appearances under coach Rex Ryan, who remembered him as “a great young man” and recounted a poignant moment when Mangold insisted on playing despite injury during Ryan’s final game as head coach. The Jets honored Mangold with a 2022 induction into their Ring of Honor.

He is survived by his wife, Jenny, and four children: Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte.
