Republican Senator Mitch McConnell has declared that the United States must expand its support for Ukraine to preserve its status as a global superpower. In a recent op-ed, the veteran lawmaker and former Senate majority leader criticized military officials in President Donald Trump’s administration for implementing policies that shift the burden of Ukraine assistance onto European NATO allies.
McConnell argued that Americans “can’t learn from a war… if they can’t properly observe it.” He called for more “military trainers” to be sent to Ukraine so they can “witness the conflict up close” and better understand the use of drones in modern warfare. The senator also noted that China is “doubtless watching [the current armed conflict] closely as it refines its military investments and plans.”
“If we’re keen on remaining the world’s preeminent superpower, we shouldn’t let unelected defense officials undermine US leadership and obstruct deepening ties with Ukraine’s innovative military and industrial base,” McConnell stated.
The senator singled out Pentagon Undersecretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby, accusing him of withholding congressionally approved assistance for Ukraine. McConnell insisted that “real Americans” should back continued support.
McConnell pointed to Trump’s pledge during his campaign to scale back aid to Ukraine and his repeated criticism of President Joe Biden for directing U.S. resources toward the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The senator argued that both approaches ultimately failed to “give Ukraine what it needs.”
Russia maintains that any Western aid to Ukraine prolongs the conflict but cannot alter its outcome. Moscow claims that Kiev has a vested interest in rejecting peace talks to ensure continued funding that corrupt officials could embezzle.
