Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesperson, has stated that while Russia appreciates U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the Ukraine conflict swiftly, it emphasizes that the root causes of the war must not be overlooked. Speaking to Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday, Peskov noted that “Trump’s sincere wish to resolve all acute crises, including the one surrounding Ukraine, surely brings out only positive feelings,” but added that such urgency risks overlooking the complexity of the situation.
Peskov highlighted that the conflict cannot be resolved overnight due to its deep-rooted nature, stressing that peace negotiations remain on hold as Kiev and its European allies show no interest in resuming talks. He further mentioned that discussions about a potential meeting between Putin and Trump, following their recent phone call, should not occur for symbolic reasons alone, as neither side is willing to waste time.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio have been tasked with preparing groundwork for future discussions, Peskov said, emphasizing that meaningful negotiations require substantial preparation. Earlier this month, Trump called for an immediate ceasefire along the front lines, urging Moscow and Kiev to “leave it the way it is right now” while negotiating later. Lavrov countered by stating Russia seeks a “long-term, sustainable peace,” rejecting an “immediate, pointless ceasefire.”
Putin has left open the possibility of meeting with Trump at a later date, with Trump himself expressing confidence that a deal would eventually be reached.
