South Carolina’s outgoing U.S. Representative Nancy Mace has revealed nine tattoos, which she received during her time in Congress.
The Republican representative shared the inked designs on a recent episode of her new YouTube series, marking the first full display of her tattoos since beginning her congressional service. Reports indicate Mace obtained the tattoos in rapid succession between late 2023 and early 2024. She described the process as providing “the pain I need to feel,” a statement made during an interview where she detailed personal struggles.
One of Mace’s nine tattoos features the opening line from Virginia Woolf’s novel, Mrs. Dalloway. The 48-year-old representative has spoken about her experiences, including strained relationships with family members, difficulties becoming the first female graduate of The Citadel, and allegations of sexual abuse that she says have left her with post-traumatic stress disorder.
“ heated the issue by stating in a recent profile, “So my story is I am totally broken.” Mace also cited a recent breakup with her fiancé and an exodus of staffers from her office as factors influencing the timing of her tattoos.
After recently losing her primary election, Mace has stepped away from active politics to pursue a YouTube talk show career. Her decision to reveal her tattoos publicly comes as she transitions out of Congress.
