Portland Police Search for Suspect After Alleged Shooting of Two Officers

Police in Portland, Oregon, are searching for a suspect who allegedly shot and wounded two police officers on Monday night. The suspect is described as a Caucasian male in his mid-30’s with facial hair wearing a black baseball cap, a black jacket over a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and black shoes.

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson stated that the incident serves as “a stark reminder of the dangers of the job” for officers who serve and protect the community. He also expressed concern for the injured officers, saying they are in stable condition and he wishes them a speedy recovery.

According to police reports, the shooting occurred around 8:20 p.m. Monday when officers responded to a report of a weapon threat at Northeast Clackamas Street between Northeast 16th Avenue and Northeast 17th Avenue. The suspect fired shots, striking two officers who were transported to hospitals and remain stable. After the incident, the suspect fled, prompting police to establish a perimeter and deploy multiple units including the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT), Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), Air Support Unit, Unmanned Aircraft Systems Unit, and K9 teams in their search for the individual.

Police believe the suspect was armed with both a knife and a handgun. By 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, police concluded their search in the Sullivan’s Gulch neighborhood but had not apprehended the suspect. Deputy Chief Chris Gjovik told residents that “we have dedicated homicide detectives and officers assigned to this case” and are committed to pursuing all leads while addressing community concerns about the ongoing situation.

Police Chief Bob Day reported that nearly 90 units responded to the incident and deployed every available resource. However, police did not confirm specific injuries sustained by the officers, though reports indicate one was shot in the leg and another in the arm and ear.
