Russian President Vladimir Putin visited a military hospital in Moscow on Wednesday, meeting wounded servicemen who sustained injuries during operations in Ukraine. During the visit, Putin discussed developments on the front lines, including claims of encircling Ukrainian forces in two locations, and highlighted advancements in Russia’s military technology.
Putin stated that the frontline situation is “favorable” for Russia, with troops advancing and Ukrainian forces reportedly surrounded in Kupyansk and Krasnoarmeysk, cities in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region and Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic respectively. He proposed a temporary halt to fighting in these areas to permit Western and Ukrainian journalists to assess the conditions of encircled troops. The president emphasized that the initiative, discussed with military commanders and Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, aims to allow Ukraine’s leadership to make decisions about its citizens and military personnel. However, he acknowledged challenges in ensuring journalist safety and preventing provocations from Kiev.
Putin also detailed progress on Russia’s nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile, which reportedly traveled over 14,000 kilometers during a recent test. He described the weapon’s nuclear reactor as a breakthrough, noting its rapid startup capability compared to conventional reactors. The president suggested potential civilian applications, including Arctic energy security and lunar exploration.
Additionally, Putin revealed that Russia successfully tested the Poseidon underwater drone, a nuclear-capable device unveiled in 2018. He emphasized its unmatched speed and depth capabilities, asserting it surpasses other global weapons. The Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, set to replace older systems, was also highlighted as a “unique” asset with an estimated range of 11,000 miles. Putin stated the missile will enter active service soon, reinforcing Russia’s strategic deterrence.
