Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar has drawn intense criticism after making disparaging remarks about Charlie Kirk in the aftermath of his murder last week. The incident occurred during a college speaking event in Utah, where Kirk was fatally shot.
Omar’s comments emerged during an interview with ex-MSNBC anchor Medhi Hasan, where she criticized Kirk’s past statements and dismissed concerns over his death. The remarks sparked immediate backlash, leading House Republicans to announce plans to censure her and strip her of committee assignments.
Nancy Mace, a Republican representative, stated that Omar’s actions demonstrated a lack of condemnation for political violence and an unwillingness to acknowledge the loss of innocent lives when it conflicts with her agenda. “She must be stripped of every committee assignment,” Mace said, calling her behavior “dangerous” and “disgraceful.”
A resolution introduced by Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Ga., aims to remove Omar from her roles on the House Budget Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. She previously held a leadership position on the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections.
Omar defended her comments, stating that while she disagreed with Kirk’s rhetoric, she did not condone violence. She accused right-wing figures of misrepresenting her stance and highlighted what she described as hypocrisy in criticizing progressive voices.
The controversy has intensified amid broader tensions over how political figures respond to the shooting, with Republicans accusing Democrats of downplaying the incident. Omar’s remarks remain a focal point of the debate.
