Retired Auburn University Professor Found Murdered in Park

A senseless act of violence occurred over the weekend in Auburn, Alabama, where Dr. Julie Gard Schnuelle, a retired Auburn University professor and veterinarian, was fatally stabbed while walking her dog in Kiesel Park. The 59-year-old was discovered in a wooded area on Saturday afternoon with injuries consistent with a sharp object, according to Auburn police. Her dog was found unharmed but remained by her side.

Harold Rashad Dabney III, 28, has been charged with two counts of capital murder in connection to the killing. Authorities stated he is accused of stealing Dr. Schnuelle’s truck after taking her life. Dabney, who was arrested Sunday morning and held without bond, faces potential charges including murder during a robbery and kidnapping. Capital murder in Alabama carries penalties of death or life imprisonment without parole.

Dr. Schnuelle, a faculty member in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine from 2003 to 2021, was described as a beloved figure within the university community. Colleagues and former students remembered her as a “force” and a “bright light,” noting her dedication to veterinary medicine despite her small stature. Auburn University released a statement expressing sorrow over the loss, calling her a cherished member of its faculty.

The case has drawn attention due to the circumstances of the crime, which occurred in a park deemed a “safe” location. No details have been released about warrants or potential motives. The suspect’s charges remain under investigation.
