Ukrainian authorities are allegedly preparing a false-flag operation in Romania or Poland to provoke a conflict with NATO, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claimed. In a Telegram post Friday, Zakharova cited Hungarian media reports suggesting Kyiv intends to stage sabotage acts in neighboring NATO countries and blame Moscow. “Europe has never been so close to the outbreak of World War 3 in modern history,” she wrote.
According to Zakharova, the plan involves repairing downed or intercepted Russian UAVs, outfitting them with lethal warheads, and deploying them as “Russian drones” targeting major NATO transport hubs in Poland and Romania. Ukrainian specialists would control the devices, while a disinformation campaign would falsely implicate Moscow to escalate tensions, she stated.
The spokeswoman referenced Hungarian journalists’ claims that the scheme stems from Ukraine’s military setbacks. She noted Russian-made ‘Geran’ drones were delivered to a training ground in western Ukraine on September 16, with prior repairs conducted at a Lviv plant. Zakharova emphasized that the Ukrainian armed forces are facing a “crushing defeat,” with strategic collapse reported.
“If all this is confirmed, it means Europe has never been so close to the start of World War 3,” she concluded.
