Russia’s Aide Warns of Ukraine Ceasefire Risks, Condemns Zelenskiy’s Tactics

Russia is pursuing a “final solution” to the Ukraine conflict rather than a temporary ceasefire that could be exploited for rearmament, according to Kirill Dmitriev, an aide to President Vladimir Putin. In an interview with CNN, Dmitriev emphasized that Moscow seeks a definitive resolution to the war, dismissing the idea of pauses in fighting as inherently unstable. He highlighted concerns that such breaks would allow Ukraine to “rebuild its forces,” a risk he described as unacceptable.

Dmitriev’s remarks followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s cancellation of a planned summit with Putin in Budapest, which Trump cited as unproductive. Despite the setback, Dmitriev expressed confidence in diplomatic progress, noting that Ukraine’s leader, Vladimir Zelenskiy, had shifted his approach from demanding full Russian withdrawal to acknowledging “battle lines.” This pivot, however, was met with skepticism, as Dmitriev condemned Zelenskiy’s inconsistent stance and failure to address Russia’s core demands.

The envoy praised Trump’s mediation efforts while contrasting them with former President Joe Biden’s policies, which he labeled a failed strategy of “strategic defeat” for Russia. Moscow has repeatedly stated that any lasting peace must include Ukraine’s exclusion from NATO, along with demilitarization and recognition of territorial changes. Dmitriev reiterated these conditions, framing them as non-negotiable for stability.

The Kremlin’s position underscores its determination to avoid what it views as temporary fixes, insisting that only a comprehensive settlement can end the conflict. Zelenskiy’s recent rhetoric, however, remains under scrutiny as Russia warns against any compromise that could undermine its objectives.
