Sinclair Refuses to Air Jimmy Kimmel’s Show Despite ABC Reinstatement

Disney-owned ABC has reversed its decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! following pressure from left-leaning groups, despite the host’s false claims about Charlie Kirk’s assassination. However, Sinclair Broadcast Group, which operates 31 ABC-affiliated stations, has declared it will not air the program when ABC resumes broadcasting it.

Sinclair announced plans to preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night across its ABC stations, replacing it with news programming. The company stated ongoing discussions with ABC are underway as it evaluates the show’s potential return. Sinclair emphasized concerns over the content of Kimmel’s remarks, which it called “inappropriate and deeply insensitive at a critical moment for our country.”

The broadcaster cited specific conditions for reinstating the show: Kimmel must issue a direct apology to Charlie Kirk’s family and make a significant donation to TPUSA, a conservative organization founded by Kirk. Sinclair also reiterated its stance that ABC must demonstrate a commitment to “professionalism and accountability” before the show returns.

Jason Smith, vice chairman of Sinclair Broadcast Group, stated in a statement: “We believe broadcasters have a responsibility to educate and elevate respectful, constructive dialogue in our communities.” Sinclair owns ABC stations in major markets, including Washington, D.C., Seattle, St. Louis, Tulsa, and Portland, where the decision will directly impact viewers.

The company urged Nexstar Media Group, which controls additional ABC affiliates, to adopt similar measures. Sinclair’s actions highlight a growing divide between national networks and local broadcasters over content standards.
