South Carolina Lawmakers Push to Name Interstate Highway After President Trump

State Representative Heather Crawford of District 68 has introduced legislation to designate South Carolina’s proposed I-73 highway as the “President Donald J. Trump Highway,” according to a report by WMBF. The bill was formally presented Tuesday, with Crawford stating it honors a president whose “leadership put America First.”

Crawford emphasized that President Trump secured critical federal permits through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during his administration—a milestone that resolved decades of delays in constructing I-73. She noted the highway would significantly enhance hurricane evacuation routes and support economic growth for South Carolina families and businesses, particularly in Horry County, which remains the state’s largest county without direct interstate access.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson endorsed the initiative, calling it a “well-deserved tribute” to Trump’s achievements for the state. Wilson stated that President Trump’s leadership enabled the project through federal approvals now making construction feasible. Similarly, Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette praised the effort as “a special way to honor President Trump,” highlighting his commitment to infrastructure development.

Crawford cited recent voter approval of South Carolina’s RIDE IV program in November 2024, which committed $450 million in local matching funds for I-73 construction. She described the project as vital for regional growth and accessibility across the state.
