Indiana Governor Mike Braun signed a proclamation designating June as “Nuclear Family Month” in Indiana. The governor, who described himself as a father of four and grandfather of seven, stated, “As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, this proclamation recognizes the important role families play in shaping the future of our state and our country.” Braun emphasized that Indiana will continue supporting policies strengthening families and helping the next generation thrive.
The move aligns with a growing trend among Republican-led states to establish alternative observances during June traditionally dedicated to Pride Month. Tennessee’s legislature recently passed a joint resolution declaring June “Nuclear Family Month,” referencing a nuclear family as “God’s perfect design for humanity.” Governors of Arkansas and Utah have similarly proclaimed June as “Fidelity Month” and “Nuclear Family Month,” respectively, promoting dedication to family and patriotism while noting neither proclamation limited fidelity solely to heterosexual couples.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt declared June “Life Month,” stating, “God authors every life. As image bearers, there is inherent dignity and value in every human life.” Stitt added that Oklahoma remains committed to supporting mothers and protecting unborn children from conception through birth. Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders described the state’s June observance as “fidelity to family, fidelity to country, fidelity to God,” underscoring a focus on spiritual and civic values central to her administration.
These proclamations frame their states’ identities around principles of faith, liberty, and patriotism, citing historical references in foundational documents like the Declaration of Independence and remarks from President George Washington about virtue and morality in self-government. The initiatives emphasize that cultivating commitment to these values contributes to “human flourishing” and a “healthy, stable, well-ordered society.”
