Tragic Death of 19-Year-Old Indonesian Gymnast During Training in Russia

A 19-year-old Indonesian gymnast died in Penza, Russia, after sustaining a severe neck injury during training, according to the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation. Naufal Takdir Al Bari spent 12 days in intensive care at GA Zakharyin Hospital before passing away.

The federation confirmed the athlete’s death, stating he fell “awkwardly” into a foam pit while attempting an advanced skill on a high bar. The Russian Gymnastics Federation reported that Al Bari was not prepared for the complex maneuver, which led to his injury.

Al Bari was reportedly preparing for the 2025 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Indonesia and had aspirations of competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Ita Yuliati, chairperson of the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation, described him as a “talented young athlete” and expressed deep sorrow over his loss.

Russian officials stated they conducted an investigation into the incident and informed the Indonesian federation of their findings. Vasily Titov, vice president of the Russian Gymnastics Federation, noted that Al Bari was not ready to perform the element he attempted. The specific stunt he was executing remains undisclosed.
