Tragic Discovery: Dead Body Found in Aircraft Landing Gear

Maintenance workers uncovered a deceased individual inside the landing gear of an American Airlines plane that arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina, following a flight from Europe. The body was discovered shortly after 9 a.m. on Sunday during routine maintenance checks.

“The person was declared dead at the scene by airport police,” a report stated. “CMPD’s Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Search teams arrived to investigate and gather evidence, alongside support from Operations Command and MEDIC.”

American Airlines confirmed in a statement to ABC News, “We are cooperating with law enforcement on their investigation.” Charlotte Airport authorities expressed sorrow over the incident, adding, “We are deeply saddened by this news and will assist the CMPD’s investigation as needed. Airport operations remain unaffected.”

Aviation analyst John Nance noted that stowing away on commercial aircraft typically results in death due to extreme conditions in the wheelwell. A Charlotte Douglas Airport spokesperson reiterated, “We are devastated by this tragedy and will support the CMPD’s investigation as required.” The airline added, “A deceased individual was found in one of our aircraft’s main landing gear compartments. Further inquiries should be directed to local authorities.”

CMPD confirmed the case is ongoing, with more details expected as they emerge.
