President Trump revealed plans to deploy National Guard troops to New Orleans to address rising crime and restore safety in the city. Speaking at an event on Friday night, Trump declared, “We’re going to come into New Orleans, and we’re going to make that place so safe.” He criticized the city’s current situation, citing “a couple of headaches, like murders, a lot of little murders going on,” and vowed to “clean it up” within two weeks.
Trump’s decision comes amid tensions with Illinois Democrats, who have opposed federal crime crackdowns in Chicago. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D) condemned the president’s approach as an “insult,” while Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) highlighted his city’s “Protecting Chicago Initiative” to safeguard residents’ constitutional rights.
New Orleans, governed by Democratic Mayor LaToya Cantrell, faces a different political landscape in Louisiana, where Republican Governor Jeff Landry has blamed the state’s crime surge on progressive policies. Trump previously hinted at deploying National Guard forces to either Chicago or New Orleans, stating, “We’re gonna be going to maybe Louisiana, and you have New Orleans, which has a crime problem.”
The City of New Orleans and the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) emphasized their ongoing efforts to reduce crime, citing declining trends in violent offenses. Data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association shows homicides dropped 27% over the past year, with rapes down 15% and robberies falling 16.5%. Despite these figures, Cantrell did not directly address Trump’s proposal, deferring to the city’s official statement on crime reduction efforts.
