Trump-Backed Ex-Soldier Challenges GOP Rival in Kentucky Primary Fight

A former Navy SEAL and fifth-generation Kentucky farmer has launched a bid to unseat Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) in the Republican primary, backed by former President Donald Trump. Ed Gallrein, who served three decades in uniform, including deployments to Panama, Afghanistan, and Iraq, announced his campaign with a statement emphasizing his commitment to supporting Trump’s agenda.

Gallrein highlighted his military credentials, noting four Bronze Stars and two Presidential Unit Citations, as well as his deep roots in Kentucky. His family has farmed the state for over a century, operating one of its largest grain operations. He framed his candidacy as a mission to “deliver America First results” and align with Trump’s priorities.

Massie responded to Gallrein’s challenge, calling him a “failed candidate and establishment hack” after Gallrein’s unsuccessful run for the state Senate last year. Massie alleged that Trump’s team had pressured Gallrein to enter the race, citing his repeated requests for support. The clash comes amid Trump’s broader effort to remove Massie from Congress, following the lawmaker’s opposition to a major GOP legislative measure.

Trump publicly endorsed Gallrein, labeling Massie a “Weak and Pathetic RINO” and praising Gallrein as a “true America First Patriot.” The president’s political team has invested $1.8 million through a super PAC to unseat Massie, who is now seeking to force a vote on releasing documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.

Gallrein’s campaign follows months of internal GOP tensions, with Trump and his allies exploring potential challengers to Massie. The contest underscores deepening divisions within the party as candidates vie for influence in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District.
