President Donald Trump on Monday urged New York City voters to support former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in Tuesday’s mayoral election, criticizing Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani as a “Communist” who would harm the city.
“In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that if Mamdani wins, he would minimize federal funding to New York, calling the city “a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster” under his leadership. He argued that Mamdani’s policies, rooted in “Communist principles,” have historically failed and warned that New York would face irreversible decline.
Trump also framed Cuomo as the “lesser of two evils,” asserting that a “bad Democrat” like Cuomo is preferable to a “Communist” with no experience. He reiterated this stance on “60 Minutes,” claiming that funding New York under Mamdani would be a waste of taxpayer money.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist who stunned the political landscape by defeating Cuomo in the June Democratic primary, responded with sarcasm, thanking Cuomo for his efforts. Meanwhile, polls show Cuomo narrowing Mamdani’s lead, with 43.9% to 39.4% in a recent survey conducted by AtlasIntel. Republican Curtis Sliwa trails with 15.5%.
Early voting saw record turnout, with over 700,000 New Yorkers casting ballots—four times the 2021 total. Voters aged 55-82 showed higher participation, potentially benefiting Cuomo’s bid to reclaim the race.
