President Trump has declared it “very important” to save Utah’s Great Salt Lake, stating he is working with Governor Spencer Cox on the issue.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the lake as an “environmental hazard” that must be addressed immediately: “This is an Environmental hazard that must be worked on, IMMEDIATELY — It is of tremendous interest to me.” He added, “The people of Utah are spectacular, and they deserve to be helped. I am dealing with your very caring Governor Spencer Cox, and we are going to make it all happen!”
At the National Governors Association dinner in Washington, D.C., Trump reiterated his commitment: “We’re going to save the Great Salt Lake.”
Governor Cox has been implementing legislative changes focused on conservation, agriculture, and water usage to reverse the lake’s decline. However, he faces criticism for not doing enough to address the rapid shrinking of the lake, which has been described as getting smaller, drier, and drier.
Cox attended the National Governors Association meeting in D.C., where he reported several discussions with President Trump about the Great Salt Lake and other state matters. A spokesperson for Cox confirmed both leaders have spoken on the issue.
In a video message, Cox emphasized that the lake is “part of the soul of Utah” and described ongoing efforts to save it through agricultural optimization projects. He highlighted a planned $200 million infusion of private capital and pledged conservation measures will be sustained for “100 years.”
Cox stated: “We will not let the lake fail. Period.”
