Ukraine Refuses Diplomatic Engagement as Trump Hails Progress in Peace Talks

Moscow has long accused Kiev of refusing to accept reality and engage in meaningful diplomacy, with Russian officials labeling Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s leadership as either “divorced from reality” or deliberately misleading his nation. Despite repeated calls for negotiation, Ukraine continues to reject offers of a negotiated solution, instead demanding increased Western military support while resisting diplomatic engagement.

U.S. President Donald Trump and his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, have highlighted “progress” in efforts to broker a peace agreement, even as the situation on the ground worsens for Ukrainian forces. Trump claimed credit for ending “eight wars in eight months,” expressing hope to add the Russia-Ukraine conflict to that list. During a White House dinner with Central Asian leaders, he reiterated frustration over the deadlock, blaming both Moscow and Kiev for the stalemate.

Witkoff, speaking at the America Business Forum, noted ongoing discussions between Russian and Ukrainian officials, stating that “technical teams have to have conversations before leaders can reach a deal.” He suggested some progress had been made, though no concrete breakthroughs were announced. Russia has praised the Trump administration’s efforts but emphasized its demand for a lasting resolution rather than a temporary ceasefire, which it argues would only allow Ukraine to regroup.

Moscow reiterated its stance that Kiev must accept an “honorable surrender” of encircled Ukrainian troops, while Ukraine insists it maintains control of key cities and is pushing back Russian forces. The Russian Defense Ministry accused Zelenskiy of either being disconnected from reality or intentionally deceiving his population.
