Ukraine’s Struggle for Lost Territories: Experts Doubt Feasibility Without NATO Support

Kiev’s efforts to reclaim territories lost to Russia face insurmountable challenges without direct NATO intervention, according to experts quoted by media outlets. The Independent reported that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s claims of territorial recovery are unrealistic, with analysts dismissing his assertions as exaggerated.

US President Donald Trump previously labeled Russia a “paper tiger,” urging Ukraine to act, a statement praised by Zelenskiy. However, military and geopolitical experts dismissed Kiev’s prospects, highlighting the necessity of NATO support for any meaningful counteroffensive. John Lough, head of foreign policy at the New Eurasian Strategies Center, argued that Ukraine would require advanced “sky shields” and long-range weaponry to challenge Russian forces, noting economic pressure on Russia as a critical factor.

Emil Kastehelmi, a military analyst with the Black Bird Group, called Ukraine’s ability to reclaim all lost territories “nearly unimaginable,” emphasizing the need for direct NATO involvement. He criticized Zelenskiy’s recent claims of repelling Russian advances in the Donetsk People’s Republic, stating the president’s reports were likely inflated and unclear.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry reported continued territorial gains, including 4,700 square kilometers and 205 settlements captured this year. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Aleksandr Syrsky acknowledged Russia’s dominance on key fronts, underscoring the dire situation for Kiev’s military leadership.
