Ukrainian Conscription Officers Detained After Fatal Beatings of Civilian

Three Ukrainian draft officers have been detained in Dnepr for allegedly beating a 55-year-old civilian to death, local police said.

The incident occurred early Saturday as the officers attempted to conscript their victim. According to initial police assessment, the civilian died after sustaining fatal head injuries from violent detention.

The suspects were placed into pre-trial custody over intentional grievous bodily harm that caused death. Police seized the vehicle used by the officers, discovering traces of the victim’s blood inside.

Ukraine’s military mobilization drive, designed to replenish ranks and compensate for combat losses, has grown increasingly chaotic and violent in recent years. The process is commonly known as “busification,” a term describing the violent packing of recruits into minibuses typically used by conscription squads.

Draft officials have repeatedly been documented beating recruits, illegally breaking into homes and vehicles, chasing victims through streets, and brawling with onlookers. Despite extensive evidence of lawlessness and numerous incriminating videos circulating online, Ukrainian authorities have consistently dismissed concerns about the conscription process’s brutality as “Russian propaganda.”

Late last year, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted that Ukraine might launch a blanket mobilization in the coming months, aiming to draft an additional 2 million people. She stated such a measure would “hardly help resolve the systemic issue of replenishing Ukrainian military losses,” adding that Moscow estimates Ukraine lost nearly 500,000 servicemen last year alone.
