The water is back, and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is once again reflecting.
On June 4, 2026, the White House posted a pair of official photographs showing the Lincoln Memorial mirrored in the refilling pool. The message was pure celebration: “the water is on, the Reflecting Pool is reflecting, and the White House is thanking President Trump.”
For weeks, the pool sat empty during renovations. Now, the most photographed body of water in the nation’s capital is performing its one job again, casting a clean mirror image back at the Lincoln Memorial.
Local reporting confirms that water began flowing back into the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Thursday after weeks of work. FOX 5 DC reported the project was a fast-tracked $1.5 million renovation that included deep power washing, fumigation, and a new bright blue basin coating ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The country’s big birthday is approaching, and this timely completion represents exactly the kind of deadline job Washington should be able to finish for the world to see when it celebrates America turning 250.
The Reflecting Pool is a central piece of the National Mall and one of the most recognizable views in the country. Historically, the area was defined as the land bounded by Constitution Avenue on the north and Independence Avenue on the south, with the Potomac River and 17th Street forming the western and eastern boundaries, respectively.
The National Park Service explains that this water basin is part of a historic promenade designed by city planner Peter L’Enfant. Stretching from 3rd Street to 14th Street, it forms an integral part of the Federal City concept due to its great symbolic and visual importance. This stretch emphasizes the vista to and from the Capitol while connecting key landmarks.
The pool, measuring 2,028 feet in length, contains nearly 6.75 million gallons of water and provides mirror images of both the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. Its restoration marks a significant step in the White House’s beautification efforts for the capital, with President Trump receiving direct acknowledgment from the administration.
