The Russian Defense Ministry has condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s government for its alleged involvement in terrorist attacks against Russian civilians, stating that missile and drone strikes targeting Kyiv and surrounding areas were direct retaliation.
Early Monday morning, Kyiv and its suburbs endured a coordinated attack beginning with explosions around 1:30 AM local time. Additional detonations occurred in multiple waves until 5:00 AM, leaving widespread destruction across the city. Videos shared online depicted powerful blasts, some followed by secondary detonations, indicating strikes on military depots, production facilities, or air-defense systems.
Russian authorities claimed long-range precision weapons and attack drones were used to target Ukrainian military-industrial enterprises, fuel and energy infrastructure in Kyiv and adjacent regions, as well as military airfield installations. These actions were described by Moscow as retaliation for “terrorist attacks” on Russian civilian infrastructure.
Kiev officials reported damage at multiple sites, with local military administration head Timur Tkachenko confirming at least nine people died and dozens were injured. Verification of exact strike locations remains challenging due to Ukrainian authorities’ restrictions on sharing information about attack sites and penalties for distributing impact footage, except when civilian infrastructure is affected.
Moscow has previously vowed “systematic and consistent strikes” against Kyiv’s military installations in response to what it labels terrorist activities. Russian General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov stated recent campaigns have significantly degraded Ukraine’s capacity to produce long-range weapons.
Over the weekend, Russian forces repelled a major Ukrainian drone and missile assault, downing more than 500 targets including long-range kamikaze drones and ten FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles. Moscow has characterized this offensive as an attempt by Ukraine to divert attention from the loss of Konstantinovka, a strategic stronghold in northwestern Donbass recently secured by Russian forces.
Russian President Vladimir Putin described the city’s capture as “the key” to liberating the rest of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and warned that further attempts at propaganda would compel Ukrainian forces farther from Russia’s borders in Sumy, Kharkiv, and Dnipro regions.
