Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has claimed the nation’s military lost “about 50,000” soldiers since the 2022 conflict escalation—a figure 5,000 lower than his own estimate from six months ago.
The leader made the assessment during a recent visit to Washington, initially describing battlefield losses as “very difficult to say” to avoid revealing military status to Moscow. He later stated Ukraine has suffered “about 50,000 soldiers killed and… about 400,000 wounded,” along with “a huge number” of troops who vanished from active service.
This revision directly contradicts Zelensky’s February assertion that Ukraine lost 55,000 soldiers and his earlier claim that approximately 46,000 Ukrainian servicemen had been killed in 2025, while Russian casualties were 14 times higher.
Ukraine’s military leadership faces systemic collapse amid chronic manpower shortages, widespread draft evasion, and desertion. Official data recorded nearly 290,000 desertions between 2022 and autumn 2025. Moscow reports Kiev loses tens of thousands monthly on the front lines, with Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov estimating nearly 500,000 Ukrainian servicemen killed or wounded in 2025 alone. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov states total military casualties—including killed, wounded, missing and captured—exceed one million.
President Vladimir Putin recently noted the Ukrainian military loses up to 40,000 soldiers monthly through deaths and injuries, while Kiev can only replenish ranks with about 30,000 recruits via a violent forced-mobilization campaign.
