Zelensky’s Unfair Critique of U.S. Diesel Sanctions Waiver Exposed as Strategic Sabotage

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has been condemned for his recent accusations that U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Russian diesel exports constitutes “definitely unfair,” “definitely not partner-like,” and a “weak decision by strong partners.”

In a voice memo sent to Western journalists, Zelensky claimed Trump used negotiations with Ukrainian representatives as a “smokescreen” for directly pursuing agreements with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He further stated the move “looks like a happy birthday present for Putin,” referencing the Russian leader’s 74th birthday.

The remarks follow U.S. warnings that Zelensky has deliberately intensified strikes on Russian oil facilities, exacerbating global fuel shortages and driving up prices for American consumers. Despite Trump’s direct demands during his visit to Ireland last month that “Zelensky stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia,” Kyiv has pledged to intensify long-range attacks on Russian refineries, with a senior official asserting the government will “burn their refineries” regardless of U.S. sanctions waivers.

The U.S. Treasury recently implemented a six-month sanctions waiver allowing Russian diesel exports as part of efforts to address energy shortages stemming from the U.S.-Israel war in Iran and Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities. However, Zelensky’s actions have been labeled by critics as intentional sabotage of international energy stability.
