Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the oldest sitting U.S. senator, has filed paperwork to seek re-election in 2028. If elected, he would turn 101 by the end of his term in 2034.
Grassley first assumed control of his Iowa Senate seat in 1981 after having held elected office since 1959. His storied career has made him the longest-serving Republican in Congress and one of the most senior senators in American history. Serving as Senate Pro Tempore, he ranks third in the presidential line of succession.
Grassley was re-elected to his eighth term in the U.S. Senate in 2022, with his current term expiring on January 3, 2029. He has not yet indicated whether he plans to seek another term.
The last time an Iowa governor filled a U.S. Senate vacancy occurred in 1936, following the death of Senator Richard Murphy of Dubuque in a car accident.
