The Department of Justice has filed federal charges against two individuals involved in an attack on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during a protest in Chicago. The incident occurred on Saturday when anti-ICE demonstrators rammed vehicles into a Border Patrol vehicle, attempting to block it.
Marimar Martinez, known online as “La Maggie,” allegedly approached ICE agents with a semi-automatic firearm, prompting agents to open fire. Martinez was shot in the leg and hospitalized before being taken into FBI custody. She is a prominent figure for doxxing ICE personnel. Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz also faces charges for his role in the attack.
According to court documents, Martinez and Ruiz led a civilian “convoy” that pursued federal agents during a Customs and Border Protection operation. The vehicles drove erratically, ignored traffic signals, and traveled against traffic to intercept the agents’ vehicle. At one point, Martinez’s car sideswiped an agent’s vehicle, while Ruiz’s vehicle struck its rear. Agents exited their vehicle, and Martinez drove toward one of them before being shot.
A Department of Homeland Security statement confirmed Martinez was treated for gunshot wounds and later transferred to federal custody. The charges against both individuals include assaulting, impeding, and interfering with federal law enforcement officers. They could face up to 20 years in prison and fines exceeding $350,000.
Six additional protesters were arrested during clashes near a Chicago ICE facility on Saturday. Authorities reported charges including resisting, obstructing, and battery against those detained.
