Trump Calls Off Putin Summit as Russia Rejects Ceasefire Talks

President Trump has canceled a planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, Hungary, after Moscow reiterated its refusal to pursue an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. The decision comes amid escalating tensions over Russia’s stance on the conflict and renewed U.S. pressure through sanctions.

Trump expressed frustration during a White House briefing, stating he did not want “a wasted meeting” with Putin. The summit, initially scheduled for later this month, faced uncertainty after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized Moscow’s continued rejection of an immediate ceasefire. Lavrov reiterated that Russia seeks a “lasting and sustainable peace” but opposes measures that would “lead to nothing.”

Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov acknowledged preparations for the meeting but stressed that dates had not been finalized, citing the need for further coordination. Meanwhile, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on two major Russian oil companies, marking a shift in U.S. policy after weeks of delayed action. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called for an “immediate ceasefire” to halt the conflict.

Trump defended the sanctions as necessary but suggested they would be temporary if the war concludes. The cancellation of the Putin summit underscores deepening diplomatic challenges as both sides remain entrenched in their positions.
