The Department of Justice has filed federal charges against Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr., who is accused of fatally stabbing Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, on a Charlotte, North Carolina train. Brown faces one count of causing death on a mass transportation system. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated the DOJ will seek the “maximum penalty” for the crime, calling the August 22 attack a consequence of “failed soft-on-crime policies.” FBI Director Kash Patel described the assault as a “disgraceful act that should never happen in America,” emphasizing the agency’s commitment to ensuring the suspect remains incarcerated. Brown, 34, has a criminal history dating back to 2011, including arrests for felony larceny, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and assault. He is currently held without bond following his arrest on August 23.
