At Least Two Dead, Eight Critically Wounded in Active Shooter Attack at Brown University During Exams

Brown University officials confirmed that at least two people were killed and eight critically wounded when an active shooter opened fire during exams this afternoon in the engineering and physics building on campus.

One student described hiding under his desk for approximately two hours before police cleared the area.

Initially reported by the White House as having been taken into custody, a suspect has since been identified as not being the active shooter. Law enforcement officials state that the individual responsible for the attack remains at large.

Authorities are searching for the suspect, who was described as a male dressed in black. The Providence Deputy Chief of Police, Tim O’Hara, stated that no weapons were recovered but investigators believe a firearm was used in the incident.

Federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and ATF, are assisting local authorities with the ongoing investigation.

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting by federal officials.

Brown University is a private Ivy League research institution and one of the oldest higher education institutions in the country.
