A person of interest has been taken into custody for a mass shooting at Brown University on Saturday that killed two students and injured nine others.
Police state they are not seeking additional suspects, and the university lockdown has been lifted. Students have been dismissed for winter break with all final exams canceled.
The attack appears to have been targeted, with the suspect entering a specific classroom where students were studying for an economics exam. According to available reports, the shooter allegedly yelled something before opening fire and used a handgun.
The FBI released a video of the suspect, dressed in all black, walking down the street. Details about the person of interest’s identity have not been disclosed.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that the attacker targeted Professor Rachel Friedberg, who taught Judaic Studies and Economics at Brown University. Some sources claim the shooter screamed “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire.
It has been reported that local law enforcement officials were instructed by authorities in Rhode Island to avoid using the terms “Muslim” or “Islamic terror” when discussing the incident.
The person in custody was apprehended early Sunday morning at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island. Law enforcement sources state he is not a student at Brown University and was allegedly in possession of two firearms at the time of his detention.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley announced that the university lockdown has been lifted and residents of Providence can “breathe a little easier.”
