Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler Makes Emotional Return to Office After Fiery Attack

Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler returned to his first meeting in nearly three months this week, marking a significant milestone in his recovery after being set on fire outside his office. The incident, which occurred on July 30, involved Shotsie Buck-Hayes, who allegedly poured gasoline on Vogler and ignited him. Buck-Hayes has since been charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding.

Vogler described his ordeal and progress during the meeting, emphasizing the role of his family in his recovery. “My son is playing in the District Championship football game tomorrow, so I’m going to catch that,” he said. “I’m real excited. My daughter’s got a modeling show coming up. Those were two things that I really wanted to be here for.” He also credited his wife, Blair Vogler, and medical staff for their support.

The council chambers welcomed Vogler with warmth, as colleagues praised his resilience. Council member Bryant Hood called him “the originator of the Comeback City, aka the Comeback Kid,” while Barry Mayo noted, “You look good and we are with you.” Vogler shared his goal to regain full use of his hands and return to the baseball field with local children.

Buck-Hayes reportedly told police he targeted Vogler due to an alleged affair involving his wife. The motive was revealed during a court hearing, though no details about Vogler’s personal life were discussed. Vogler’s recovery has been rapid, with his release from the Intensive Care Unit on October 7—months ahead of expectations.

The council meeting concluded with Vogler expressing gratitude for the community’s support, calling Danville “the comeback kid” and “the miracle man.” Doctors continue to assist him in regaining hand function, though he still experiences pain.
