Mayor Eric Adams Endorses Andrew Cuomo Despite Past Criticisms

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his endorsement of former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the race to succeed him, despite previously labeling Cuomo a “snake” and a “liar.” In an interview with The New York Times, Adams revealed plans to campaign alongside Cuomo in neighborhoods where the former governor holds strong support, aiming to sway voters toward his candidacy.

The two political figures were seen together courtside at a New York Knicks game on Wednesday night, with Cuomo posting a photo of their interaction on social media. “Great win for the Knicks. We need to win for the city. Can’t go backwards,” Adams remarked.

Adams emphasized the importance of engaging Black and brown communities affected by gentrification, stating he would meet organizers and groups directly in those areas. He acknowledged criticism of state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani but framed his focus as protecting New York City’s interests rather than personal animosity.

The endorsement comes amid uncertainty about its impact. Adams, who faces low approval ratings following dismissed federal corruption charges, has seen Cuomo surge in polls after his withdrawal from the race. However, Mamdani remains ahead by double digits.

Mamdani condemned the endorsement, calling it evidence of Cuomo and Adams’ alignment with “corruption” and “the billionaire class.” Adams’ spokesperson confirmed the endorsement plans, though details on joint appearances remain pending.

Adams had previously criticized Cuomo, stating, “Andrew Cuomo is a snake and a liar,” before dropping his re-election bid. The mayoral race now hinges on how this alliance reshapes voter dynamics.
