Disaster Strikes as Hongqi Bridge in Sichuan Partially Collapses After Months of Operation

A partially collapsed bridge in China’s Sichuan Province has raised urgent questions about infrastructure safety following a recent disaster. The Hongqi Bridge, located in Maerkang and spanning approximately 758 meters, was completed only months prior to the incident. Local authorities reported signs of instability, including shifting mountain terrain and cracks near the structure, prompting emergency closures.

The collapse affected the approach span and roadbed but spared the main bridge structure. Officials attributed the failure to “mountain slope failure,” a term indicating ground movement destabilized part of the bridge’s foundation. While this explanation aligns with Sichuan’s history of seismic activity and unstable terrain, investigators have yet to determine whether design flaws or unforeseen geological factors were responsible.

The incident occurred days after authorities shut down traffic on the bridge following visible signs of danger. No casualties have been reported, but the event adds to a growing list of recent infrastructure failures in China. Local governments continue to assess the situation as inquiries into the cause proceed.
